For five centuries Kolno District appeared a few
times on the map of Poland as the result of administrative alterations
connected with the history of this land. For the first time Kolno was
a district town in the 15th century. Until the partitions of Poland
the town served as an administrative and trade centre. After creating
the Kingdom of Poland Kolno District was established in Łomża Gubemiya.
In 1867 the district covered 1529 sq km and included the following
parishes: Czerwone, Turośl, Łyse, Gawrychy, Kubra, Mały Płock, Rogienice
,
Stawiski, Jedwabne. In 1924 Kolno District administrated eight country
parishes: Turosi, Czerwone, Gawrychy, Lyse, Maty Flock, Przytufy,
Rogiennice, Stawiski and three town parishes: Kolno, Jedwabne and
Stawiski. The district was dissolved in 1932. However, under the Town
Council's decree of April 6th, 1948 Kolno District was restated, with
the area of 911 sq km and a capital in Kolno. In 1975, in the result
of the new administrative division of Poland the district was
dissloved..
In the result of the new administrative reform
introduced in January 1 st, 1999 Kolno District was restated in the
newly created Podlasie Province. The district's area covers 940 sq km
and includes the parishes of Grabowo, Kolno, Mały Płock, Turośl, the
parish and town of Stawiski
and the town of Kolno.
The region is touristically
attractive thanks to clean environment, beautiful forests, clean
waters with a variety offish, and rich cultural traditions with still
lively Kurpie dialect.
